Yeah, D&D is a game in which silly things happen on the regular, but given a choice, I still like to err on the side of verisimilitude, and it’s a simple fact of life that if you’re being attacked by someone in front of you and someone behind you, you’re going to get the tar kicked out of you.īut after getting some negative feedback to my advocacy of the flanking rule (including one Reddit poster who went so far as to say that as far as he was concerned, it invalidated everything else I say!), I decided to put some feelers out to learn why, exactly, some players are vehemently against granting advantage on attacks against a flanked enemy. Personally, being a longtime player of not just Dungeons and Dragons but also various war games, including quasi–war games like Sid Meier’s Civilization series, I thought using the optional flanking rule on page 251 of the fifth-edition Dungeon Master’s Guide was a no-brainer. Some DMs will find the enhanced combat options indispensable, while most will be able to turn the CR encounter lists into meaningful encounter tables.I never realized when I began writing this blog just how big a hot-button issue flanking is. Experienced DMs will find a lot of useful tables, and the magic item and planar descriptions will be especially useful. On the whole the 5E DMG looks to be a very good book.In order to flank and avoid an AoO you would typically need to go wide or use an ability. Previously, circling a creature tightly, even with a 5ft reach would provoke an AoO, as you were moving through threatened squares. A potential issue one could take with flanking in 5e is related to the change in Attack of Opportunity rules. If you’re planning to stick with 5e then there’s no question, you’ll. It is 320 pages of everything I was expecting from the 5e DMG. It’s finally here: the third and final core book for 5e D&D – the Dungeon Master’s Guide.I would love to see how the different areas of effects looks on hexes and squares.
